High-Polyphenol Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The cornerstone of Mediterranean diet longevity
What It Is
High-quality EVOO is rich in oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol, and oleuropein — polyphenols with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The PREDIMED trial established olive oil as one of the most evidence-backed dietary interventions for aging.
How It Works
Oleocanthal inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 (similar mechanism to ibuprofen). Hydroxytyrosol activates Nrf2 antioxidant pathways and supports mitochondrial function. The monounsaturated fat base (oleic acid) improves cell membrane fluidity.
The Science
PREDIMED: Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease with a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil
New England Journal of Medicine (2018) · PubMed
Major RCT (7,447 participants) showing Mediterranean diet + EVOO reduced cardiovascular events by ~30%.
Dosage
2–4 tablespoons daily (the PREDIMED trial used ~50mL/day). Choose oils with polyphenol count >300mg/kg. Look for harvest date and dark bottles.
Safety
Extremely safe. Calorie-dense (~120 cal/tbsp) — account for in overall diet. Some people experience mild GI effects at high doses.
Skeptic's Corner
The evidence here is actually quite strong — PREDIMED is a landmark trial. The main caveats are: (1) it's hard to isolate olive oil's effects from the overall Mediterranean diet, and (2) quality matters enormously — cheap 'EVOO' may be adulterated or low in polyphenols.
